With World Race training camp only one month away, I figured it was time to lay down some expectations. What do I expect from the World Race? What will I experience? What should my behavior look like?
I’ll start with some things I expect from the Race:
1) COMMUNITY. I’ve heard from the website, from staff, and from past racers that community is one of the best things but also one of the hardest things on the Race. I expect that we will love, encourage, and sharpen each other over the 11 months we spend together, despite the struggles that we will probably face living in close quarters for so long.
2) GROWTH. One reason I decided to the World Race was to challenge myself. So I expect to grow as a person and grow in my faith. I want to step out and see this great big, diverse world we live in. I want to do things that scare me, that I know are difficult, and even things I know I’m not presently very good at. I fully expect to face a wide variety of challenges on the World Race, but being challenged is the only way to actually grow.
3) VARIETY. I’ll be serving in 11 different countries over the next year. Every month will mean adjusting to a new culture, and each month will probably be a different ministry. One month we may be working in an orphanage, and the next, we may be doing bar ministry. Flexibility and open-mindedness will be key.
Expectations I want to set for myself:
1) SAY YES. To fully experience all that I can on the World Race, I want to say yes to as many things as possible. Eating weird food? Yes. Climbing that mountain? Yep. Talk to people on the street about Jesus? Ok. Speak in front of church? Sure. Whether it’s out of my comfort zone or not, I want to engage with life and with every place we go and person we meet as much as possible, so I will say YES.
2) OPENNESS. Part of the World Race journey is building real, deep relationships with teammates and squadmates. And to make that happen, I need to be honest and vulnerable with them. I also want to share what the Lord is teaching me during this time, so the plan is to write about it in future blog posts.
3) INTENTIONALITY. I want to be really intentional with how I spend my time. At home, there are so many distractions, so many things to do, the world at my fingertips. It’s hard to stay focused on anything, and it’s easy to coast day to day. But over this next year, I want to build a habit of not wasting time, and making the most of every single day.
With these expectations, I hope to reach my two main goals: growing in my relationship with God, and serving and loving people the best I can.
Please consider financially partnering with me and praying for me to reach these goals!
Loving this post! Praying for God to work within you and guide you to be willing, open, and intentional, and that He would use you and allow you to reach the people that need to be reached.
Thank you Esther! Your prayers are much appreciated! 😀 Miss you!
